Neon Lights and Their Place in Tinseltown at Universal Studios Hollywood
Universal Hollywood has shared a deep-dive look at much of the theming and neon signage that adorns its CityWalk entertainment district. In an official post on the Discover Universal blog, the California park has highlighted the wide array of era-accurate neon signage at Universal CityWalk Hollywood. The neon collection draw heavily from Los Angeles’ broader visual heritage, with the range of fixtures including actual restored and preserved signage that once appeared on theaters, businesses, and streets across the region. As the Discover Universal post details, all but one piece of neon originates from Southern California, staying true to the local style and history of Hollywood culture. Some signs in CityWalk date back as early as 1923. A Living, Breathing Museum of Neon Universal CityWalk Hollywood, which opened in 1994, was conceived as more than a traditional retail and dining corridor. Designed in collaboration with architect Jon Jerde, the district reflects an effort to create an immersive entertainment environment rather than a typical collection of storefronts. Its design draws on the cultural identity of the surrounding Los Angeles area, layering signage, landscaping, and graphics to produce a cohesive and visually engaging experience. The featured neon signage is a key element of this immersive Hollywood experience, which adds depth and character while reinforcing the district’s distinctive atmosphere. Originally, CityWalk included a dedicated exhibit space for the Museum of Neon Art, but size constraints for that space lead to a creative solution: utilize the entirety of CityWalk as an open-air gallery. This shift enabled the installation of 20 historic signs throughout the district, transforming them into preserved public artworks. Most of these pieces originate from Southern California and span several decades, from the early 1920s through the 1980s, effectively serving as a tribute to the region’s commercial and cultural history. The blog post highlights several notable examples in the original post, including: Melrose Theater Ladies The Melrose Theatre Ladies sign shown above dates to 1923, before the advent of neon tech. Instead, this design uses incandescent lighting, making it the only non-neon piece in the collection. For five decades, the “neon” ladies stood on guard over the historic Melrose Theatre. Richfield Eagle Other highlights include the Richfield eagle, once a widely recognized symbol atop mid-century gas stations. The construction of these eagle signs varied from location to location, with this particular example being made of a porcelain enamel. Wendy’s Western Woundup The Wendy’s Western Woundup sign, tied to a Sunset Boulevard boutique with connections to film poster design. This sign originates from a Sunset Boulevard boutique called Wendy’s Western Woundup where it was gifted to the store owner by a movie poster designer. The Condes’ Restaurant The Condes’ Restaurant sign, featuring a large animated chef figure. The brother-duo of restaurant owners/managers periodically repainted the sign so the chef would more closely resemble the brother who was running the kitchen at that time. Steele’s Motel Finally, the Steele’s Motel marquee, which incorporates animated elements and references a historic local motel named for the cowboy movie star Bob Steele. Today, the neon collection is positioned as a defining feature of the CityWalk experience. Maintained by dedicated teams and integrated throughout the property, the signs function both as aesthetic focal points and as cultural artifacts. Visitors are encouraged to explore the district not only for its entertainment offerings—such as retail, dining, and cinema—but also as a curated environment that celebrates the visual and historical legacy of Southern California. Explore the Sights and Sounds of CityWalk Hollywood In addition to its visual identity, CityWalk offers a mix of entertainment, dining, and retail experiences. Its anchor attraction is the Universal Cinema, featuring premium large-format screens, including IMAX. The district also includes a variety of restaurants, shops, and themed venues designed to appeal to both tourists and local visitors, with offerings tied to film, television, and broader pop culture. Overall, Universal CityWalk Hollywood operates as both a gateway to Universal themed entertainment and an entertainment destination in itself, combining commerce and curated design into a single dynamic experience. Its integration of historic neon art and new media design elements reinforces its integral role in the Universal Studios Hollywood resort experience. Self-Service Ticket Kiosks Are Gone From Universal Orlando Resort
Guests can no longer pick up their Universal Orlando Resort theme park tickets at self-service kiosks. Self-Service Kiosks Removed From Universal Orlando The pavilion that used to house the self-service kiosks outside Universal Islands of Adventure is now empty. The kiosks are also gone from the Universal Studios Florida entrance, where painting is taking place. Though the removal could be related to the refurbishment of either the kiosks themselves or the surrounding areas, it seems that they’re gone for good. ‘Pioneers’ Move Into Cotino, Disney’s Storyliving Community in Rancho Mirage
The first residents of Disney’s community development in California’s Coachella Valley have begun to move into their new homes. Early Residents of Disney’s Cotino Remain Optimistic In an article from USA Today, we’re beginning to hear details about the experiences of the first homeowners in Disney’s Cotino Storyliving community. As of March 2026, Cotino remains in its early stages of development, with dozens of homes still under construction within the community. The 618-acre project is approved for roughly 1,900 homes and condos, with the initial phase of about 300 homes expected to take several years to complete. Amenities, including the 24-acre swimmable Cotino Bay lagoon and the members-only Artisan Club, have opened to early residents, even as heavy construction continues throughout much of the site. The USA Today piece highlights two couples in particular as they share their early impressions of Disney’s neighborhood: Amy and Joe Belshin, and their new neighbors, Dolores and Dennis Hamann. The Belshins purchased their roughly $2.2 million home in late 2025 after considering other second-home markets, including Mammoth Lakes and Sun Valley. As of last month, about 30 homes in the Storyliving community have been sold. Seeking a retreat within a two-hour drive of their primary residence near San Diego, the Belshins ultimately chose Cotino over traditional country club communities in the Coachella Valley. The couple said that the merits of the community itself drew them in, having no particular bias towards the stylings of other Disney experiences, namely, theme parks. “We were impressed by the layout. It’s the creativity (of Disney) … We didn’t want a theme park,” Joe Belshin said. “We wanted a community, and it seems like they know what they’re doing in developing that.” Still, as detailed above, the community remains under varying stages of development. Joe Belshin acknowledged the realities of moving into an unfinished community: “Cotino, when they say it’s under construction, they’re not kidding — it is under construction.” For Dolores and Dennis Hamann, the decision to purchase required significant trust. The pair, who previously owned a home in Rancho Las Palmas Country Club, selected their lot before their home was built and moved in during April 2025. Dolores Hamann described the experience as isolating at first. “I felt like I was camping out in the wilderness … (When) I came out here, there wasn’t a sound,” she explained. She then characterized the move for her and Dennis as a “leap of faith”, adding: “You put your faith, your finances, everything into that corporation.” Homes at Cotino have sold for between approximately $1.3 million and more than $4 million, with many buyers coming from Southern California. Residents have begun utilizing the Artisan Club, which requires a $20,000 initiation fee plus annual dues, and features amenities including a private restaurant overlooking the lagoon. A public-facing town center is planned for later this year, bringing retail and dining options to the north side of Cotino Bay. While construction continues across much of the property, homeowners say they are optimistic about the project’s trajectory. The development includes recreational offerings such as kayaking and paddleboarding on the lagoon and a beach area featuring temperature-controlled sand designed to remain cool in desert heat. For residents like Dolores Hamann, the novelty of their new home has become a point of pride: “I say to my friend, ‘I’m going to the beach in the desert,’ and they’re like, ‘There isn’t a beach in the desert’ … I said, ‘Yes, there is.’” Would you consider buying a home in a Storyliving community by Disney? Wrongful Death Lawsuit Over Raglan Road Fatality is Dismissed
The plaintiff in the case of an allergy-related death at the Disney Springs pub has motioned to drop his lawsuit against Disney over claims of negligence. Lawsuit Dismissed Jeffrey Piccolo, the widower of Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan, a Carle Place family medicine physician, has agreed to voluntarily dismiss his wrongful death lawsuit against Walt Disney Parks & Resorts and Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant at Disney Springs in Florida. A court filing from February 27 indicates Piccolo and his attorneys have filed to withdraw the case, a move that often signals a private settlement. No agreement has been publicly confirmed as of the time of writing. The lawsuit stemmed from an October 5, 2023, dinner at Raglan Road. According to the complaint, the pub’s staff assured the family multiple times that Tangsuan’s meal — which included a broccoli and corn fritter, scallops, onion rings, and vegan shepherd’s pie — was allergen-free, even after some dishes allegedly arrived without allergen markers. Tangsuan had documented peanut and dairy allergies, which were reportedly told to the servers repeatedly. After dinner, Tangsuan experienced breathing difficulties while shopping. She eventually self-administered an EpiPen, but was later pronounced dead at a hospital. A medical examiner determined she died of anaphylaxis caused by elevated levels of dairy and nuts. Filed in February 2024, the suit accused Disney and the pub of negligence and sought damages exceeding $50,000 under Florida’s wrongful death statute for mental anguish, loss of companionship and income, and medical and funeral expenses. The End of a Nationally Criticized Civil Suit Infamously, the case drew national attention when Disney initially sought to compel arbitration based on terms Piccolo had agreed to during a prior Disney+ trial subscription. Following public scrutiny, the company withdrew that effort and allowed the case to proceed in court. During litigation, Piccolo’s attorneys requested extensive documentation regarding the meal’s ingredients and preparation. Leftovers from Tangsuan’s final meal, preserved by Piccolo, were independently tested for allergens, though the results were not publicly disclosed. Disney sought to keep those findings confidential, a move contested by Piccolo’s counsel, who also alleged discovery violations by the restaurant and cited prior incidents in which other customers reportedly received meals containing allergens despite disclosing allergies. Late last year, canceled depositions signaled that settlement discussions might have been underway before the case was ultimately dismissed. Disney CFO Says Parks Demand Outpacing Supply
Comments from Disney’s finance leadership suggest that Disney Parks & Experiences is operating at “super high” capacity, which the company seeks to balance with its offerings. Disney Parks & Experiences Exceeding Current Supply During a recent investor event at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, The Walt Disney Company’s Chief Financial Officer claimed that current demand for Disney Parks and Experiences continues to exceed the supply. That supply accounts for available capacity across its global parks, resorts, and other properties under the Parks and Experiences umbrella, including Disney Cruise Line. According to Disney’s CFO, Hugh Johnston, this imbalance between demand and supply is a key factor in the company’s current pricing power and revenue performance, with forward bookings remaining strong and weighted toward the latter part of the year. Johnston highlighted that elevated demand is not simply a short-term phenomenon but part of a broader outlook that supports continued growth over the long term. In his comments, he suggested that Disney’s parks business still expects to sustain its current return performance for “decades to come.” Johnston’s tone signals confidence in the company’s strategic plans for ongoing and near-future development in this segment of the business. These plans include a $60 billion reinvestment entailing new experiences, park expansions, and added capacity and guest offerings broadly. The emphasis on supply constraints comes as Disney navigates operational priorities such as managing attendance levels, maximizing per-guest spending, and balancing capital deployment across parks, resorts, and other areas. Of particular note in Johntson’s comments was his confirmation that Disney Parks and Experiences are operating at “super high” capacity, with a trend of the company experiencing “more demand” than they currently have the means to capture. “If I look at demand and capacity utilization for our experiences assets, whether it’s cruise ships or whether it’s parks, capacity utilization is super high, and there’s more demand than there generally is supply … I know we can fill the capacity if we build it.” Johnston’s comments suggest that demand remains robust enough globally to expect the company’s $60 billion plans to pay off in short order. He also acknowledges that some markets have seen softer performance in recent quarters compared to Disney’s domestic properties – a shift which Johnston says Disney is strategically adjusting its focus to capitalize on. “We’ve actually pivoted our marketing more to a domestic audience, and by virtue of doing that, we’re doing a good job really filling up the park and finding other sources of demand,” he noted. Beyond his comments regarding Disney Parks and Experiences, Johnston also spoke highly of his newly appointed fellow executives, Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden: “Both of those leaders have tremendous followership, and they work incredibly well together … I think it’s going to be a fantastic combination, and we’ll have a lot of fresh eyes on what we do.” Market Demand for Parks & Experiences Disney shared the details regarding its $60 billion park investment in an SEC filing in 2024. The $60 billion sum is almost double what Disney spent on parks and Disney Cruise Line in the prior 10 years, which included expansions like Pandora – The World of Avatar, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, Avengers Campus, and the Disney Wish cruise ship. In that filing, Disney listed these strategies for “turbo-charging” Disney Experiences: Accelerate Storytelling Expand Footprint Advance Commercial Leverage Talent Reach New Fans The new filing expands on the previous bullet points, stating: “Investments will build upon our strong track record of generating outsized returns and will focus on:” “Accelerating storytelling by utilizing our wealth of intellectual property, untapped stories, and unmatched creativity” “Expanding our footprint […] we have over 1,000 acres of available development across our six existing resorts in North America, Europe, and Asia” “Investing in innovative technology to improve the guest experience” “Reaching new fans around the world […] for every park guest today, we believe there are >10 consumers with Disney affinity who don’t visit the Parks in a given year” For more information on this plan from the official SEC filing, you can check out our original article here. Wizarding World Bridge Closed, Lost Continent Bridge Construction Almost Done at Universal Islands o
Construction is almost done on the bridge between The Lost Continent and Seuss Landing in Universal Islands of Adventure. The bridge between The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Jurassic Park, meanwhile, is closed. Lost Continent Bridge This bridge received new flooring and refurbished railings last year. The pavement has been covered with wood plank theming, and lanterns were installed on the sides. The only signs of construction remaining are some black scrim at one corner and scaffolding on the other side. It looks like crews have started taking apart the scaffolding, though. Wizarding World of Harry Potter Bridge The bridge between The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Jurassic Park is now completely covered by scaffolding and scrim. There are dams in the lake to keep the water levels around the bridge low. The bridge is blocked by construction walls on both sides. The bridge is not only the main walkway between the two lands, but it’s also a popular Hogwarts photo spot. The nearest bridge to travel from Jurassic Park to the Wizarding World runs from VelociCoaster to The Lost Continent. How do you feel about all this bridge construction? Let us know on social media. For Your Precious Cargo, A ‘Star Wars’ Bag Arrives At Disneyland Resort
We found a new cargo bag with subtle references to Black Spire Outpost at Disneyland Park. Our reporter found this item outside Black Spire Outfitters. Black Spire Cargo & Supply Co. Bag – $39.99 The gray bag is mostly plain, although 4 patches adorn the front in an irregular pattern. The back is plain, though the front has an extra zipper. One of the patches reads “Cargo & Supply Co.,” while another reads “property of” and then leaves a blank, presumably to write your own name. The other two patches look related to Star Wars, although we were not able to place the references. The black patch with a planet has the numbers 23-5900-13, while the last patch is reminiscent of a “New Republic” emblem. Perhaps these will become clear with the new Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run mission, or the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu film. Are you interested in this bag? Let us know on social media. REVIEW: Is There Anything Special About the Special Edition Strawberry Mickey Mouse ‘CrazyShake’ at
The CrazyShake by Black Tap pop-up in Disney Springs is offering a Special Edition Mickey Mouse Shake alongside their other signature offerings. The limited-time location opened this week in the former Sprinkles location. This milkshake first debuted at the Downtown Disney District Black Tap location in 2021. A 10% Annual Passholder discount does apply. Special Edition Mickey Mouse Shake – $24 Though this is advertised as a strawberry milkshake, it’s really a vanilla shake with strawberry sauce. That’s not necessarily a complaint—just something to be aware of. It has a vanilla frosted rim covered in Mickey Mouse sprinkles. It’s topped with a homemade Mickey-shaped crisped treat, white and red rock candy, whipped cream, red sprinkles, and a cherry. It’s big, so plan to share. Thankfully, Black Tap is self-aware, so they give you a cup with a bowl-like dish near the top to catch wayward sprinkles, rock candy, and whatever else may fall. The crisped treat is nice and chewy but not too sweet, although we didn’t like the fondant decoration. This is a great addition to Disney Springs. It’s not necessarily the best milkshake we’ve ever had but it’s Instagrammable, shareable, and sweet. Rating out of 7: 4 Would you get this Mickey shake? Let us know on social media. New Pavement Visible at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Walt Disney World
Our reporter noticed work being finished on the pavement near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ahead of its scheduled spring reopening. The Magic Kingdom ride has been closed since January 2025 for a major refurbishment. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment Our reporter spotted multiple construction workers at work on the attraction’s entrance, as they also did earlier in February. Scaffolding remains up around the entrance as it appears work is continuing throughout the day to ensure a Spring opening, although Disney has not announced a date yet. The ride has been testing on and off for a few months. The trains and the entire track have been replaced. Next to the closed attraction, work can be seen on the former Rivers of America, as it is being turned into Piston Peak. Most notably, as can be viewed below, new concrete is now visible as some of the construction walls have receded back. The brown side of the pavement is the new concrete. For reference, the picture on the right is what it used to look like. Another area is blocked off with a sign indicating strollers are not to be parked in the space. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad should reopen this spring. Changes include an updated opening scene with a transformation of the Rainbow Caverns, refreshed Audio-Animatronics, and gold props. Here is the concept art of the new Rainbow Caverns opening scene: The trains will enter the Rainbow Caverns, full of hundreds of bats, phosphorescent pools, and shimmering stalagmites and stalactites. Thunder will then rumble as the scene changes to something menacing as the mountain “fights back.” Watch our POV of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad from before its closure below: Are you counting down the days until you can ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad again? First Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets Souvenirs Arrive at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Though the attraction won’t open for several more weeks, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets pressed pennies are already available at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The Aerosmith version of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster closed permanently on Sunday, March 1. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets Pressed Pennies The penny machine is located next to the Rock Your Face kiosk in the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster courtyard. Though the ride is closed for reimagining, the courtyard and related kiosks all remain open. This appears to be the same pressed penny machine that was inside Rock Around the Shop, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster store. But it has four brand-new “Under Construction” designs featuring the Muppets. Each penny has the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets logo and “Under Construction 2026” on caution tape. In the center of each design is a different Muppet: Fozzie Bear, Bean Bunny, Sweetums, and the Swedish Chef. Fozzie, Bean, and Sweetums wear hardhats. The Swedish Chef has a light on his hat and holds a saw. None of these characters are expected to play major roles in Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. It will feature The Electric Mayhem, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Scooter, and the penguins. But other characters could make cameo appearances. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will open some time this summer. Check out our last look at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith and watch our video POV below.
