How Ship Tracking Works
All commercial vessels over 300 gross tons are required to carry AIS (Automatic Identification System) transponders. These devices broadcast the ship's position, speed, heading, and other data via radio signals.
AIS receivers around the world (on shore, on other ships, and even satellites) pick up these signals and relay them to tracking services like MarineTraffic and VesselFinder.
